Hyderabad: Opposition parties, social activists and others from the city are planning to boycott the Telangana State’s official Iftar.
The allotment of Rs 26 crore for a state whose capital Hyderabad alone has 10 lakh Muslim families is just an eyewash, social activists say.
“This money is of no use to the community. If the government really cares, scholarships should be given to the poor and loans should be provided to those who are being trapped by money lenders,” said Mohammed Akram, an activist from the old city.
Akram says that social activists and some small parties are thinking of holding a dharna to announce the boycott. Some others say that the promotion of religious celebrations is not a good sign for a democracy like India.
Mohammad Ilyas of Bharatiya Samajwadi Party said, “Let the government keep off festivals. They are religious activities, be it Ramzan or Bonalu, and it is best the government keeps out of it. The government should empower the poor. It doesn’t make sense to feed one community on a particular day.”
The parties and distribution of clothes, for which the government has sanctioned Rs 26 crore will be held across Telangana on July 12. Most opposition parties are now preparing to boycott the parties.
