Value-added fish products soon in Kerala

A detailed project report has been prepared and submitted for the National Fisheries Board

KOCHI: The State Government is all set to establish a fully mechanized facility for manufacturing and processing of value-added fish products in the state, Fisheries Minister K Babu told reporters on Saturday.

The facility will be able to handle a variety of fish products, he said. A detailed project report has been prepared and submitted for the National Fisheries Board. “The new unit will increase the production capacity from 5 ton to 15 ton,” Mr. Babu said.

The minister was in Kochi to launch a dry fish product introduced in the market by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) under the brand name ‘Drish Kerala’.

The minister said that the new initiative would provide employment opportunities to a large number of women fisher-folk in the coastal areas of the state.

Dr K Ampady, managing director of the KSCADC said they would soon tie-up with distributors across the state to market the new products.

“We are first focusing the Kerala market and will scale up operations in other states, particularly in the north-east” he added.

‘Drish Kerala’ products are varied types of fish, including Neendakara-Karikkadi, Ashtamudi-Thelli, and Malabar-Natholi, which are dried and processed at the facility of KSCADC in Shaktikulangara in Kollam.

The fish varieties are branded as Neendakara, Ashtamudi and Malabar respectively. Ampady said ‘Drish Kerala’ is a high-end quality product processed as per international standards.
