Chennai witnesses hottest day in July for almost a decade

High temperatures are likely to continue in the city for the next couple of days

Chennai: Saturday turned out to be the hottest day this month in Chennai for almost a decade. It was 40.1 degree Celsius.The dog days are not over. High temperatures are likely to continue in the city for the next couple of days, weathermen have forecast.

Acknowledging that the present hot weather condition to be abnormal, a meteorological department official said the trend is likely to continue in the coming days. He attributed the sharp rise in temperature due to the late onset of sea breeze. “The sea breeze which is normally expected around 2.30 P.M has not been recorded in the last few days.

As a result, temperatures across all coastal areas in the state, including Chennai, are shooting up,” the official said. While Nungambakkam observatory saw the temperature exceeding 40degrees, Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5 degree Celsius. On the power front, consumption in the state was 299.934 million units (MU)on Friday bettering Thursday’s 298.91 MU.
