Instagram incorporates real-time events on feed

Photo-sharing app enhanced its ‘Explore’ feature
Instagram, the photo-sharing app, incorporated a couple of changes into its timeline that will see it match Twitter in terms of real-time events, trends and conversations. The key change is the revamping of the ‘Explore’ tab. Though people tend to post pictures on their personal feed of live events, Instagram didn’t have a common platform to bring them together. The new change is expected to provide a more common stage to share and converse about live events.
Twitter had attempted to buy Instagram in 2012, but it was eventually sold to Facebook for $1 billion. Twitter was more text-based, while Instagram was solely picture driven, but with time the lines have been blurred bringing the two closer. Twitter has been giving more visibility to pictures and videos on its timeline and the latest auto-play function added to the visual feel of the micro-blogging site. Similarly, Instagram is now trying to create a platform for sharing info and posts on live events like Twitter does.
Both Twitter and Instagram have a sizeable amount of following to rival each other and the new change only ushers in stiffer competition. Twitter had, earlier, released similar changes for Lightning, its project that will see human editors curate tweets for live events.
“Whether it’s behind the scenes at the NBA Finals or on the runway with the latest fashion trend at a favourite club with a local band, people are capturing moments, large and small, on Instagram. But, until now, there’s never been an easy way to find these moments. “Rich visual content captures everyone’s unique take — not just what the community is talking about, but also what they’re doing and seeing,” Instagram said in a blog post announcing the changes.
Instagram has added ‘Tags’ and ‘Places’ section in its explorer to go along with hashtags that will help the photo-sharing app to sort and curate from the 70 million photos and videos that are being posted every day, to make its content more accessible to users with enhanced search features. The Explore updates are currently available on IOS and Android.
