Workshop on water management in Coimbatore

Innovative technologies are the pertinent answer to cater to the ever rising water demand
COIMBATORE: Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode regions have been traditional innovators in terms of effectively managing their water resources. This region has been witnessed to have one of the best water management practices in the country, said Dr Ashok Natarajan, CEO of Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company (TWIC) Ltd at a workshop on effective water management organised at CII conference hall.
With the increase in population, water allocation for industrial, agricultural and domestic use has been rather stressful for the local administration in the last decade. Innovative technologies are the pertinent answer to cater to the ever rising water demand, he added.
Under the recently launched Amrut scheme of the Union government, Tamil Nadu has got the largest mandate with about 12 cities identified for the launch of this scheme. TWIC has been instrumental in setting up of Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) treatment plant in Tirupur and is planning to set up a Central combined effluent treatment plant catering to the areas of Palladam, Komarapalayam, Erode and Salem catering to the micro dyeing units.
“Coimbatore corporation is likely to receive a huge amount of investment to the tune of Rs 500 crore for upgrading its facilities towards implementing 24/7 water supply system,” he added. Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plants, which are being set up at Koyambedu in Chennai, will also be developed in Coimbatore as well. He signed off saying the outlook for developing effective water management systems in the city is highly positive.
Dr K. Vijayakarthikeyan corporation commissioner said that the corporation is currently in the process of organising stakeholder consultative meetings to gather inputs as well as assess the details for undertaking this initiative in the city, the culmination of which would be the development of Smart water management practices as a part of the Smart City Plan (SCP).
