Mother backs out, mother-in-law doesn’t

Mother-in-law donates kidney while mom refuses
NEW DELHI: In an unusual twist of a family saga, a mother-in law saved her daughter-in-law by donating her kidney after her mother backed out at the last moment. Kavita, a 36-year-old housewife from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, had to undergo a kidney transplant and her mother agreed to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter. However, Kavita was shocked as her mother refused to donate the kidney at last minute. Finally, her mother-in-law, Vimla (65), came forward and donated her kidney.
“It is not a reel story, but a real one with a happy ending. Kavita underwent successful kidney transplantation. She is fine and will lead a normal life after she fully recovers. It’s amazing to see the relationship between Kavita and her mother-in-law. This is a perfect example of happy joint family,” senior consultant and director, nephrology, BLK Super Speciality Hospital, Dr Sunil Prakash, said.
According to the doctors, Kavita was suffering from frequent bouts of vomiting and sudden weight loss when she first visited a local doctor in Uttam Nagar. At the time, she was kept on medication and stopped vomiting, but her weight loss was persistent. After an ultrasound test, it was found out that she needed renal transplant.
“However, her family was faced with the biggest challenge to find a first degree donor, which can only be amongst close family members like mother, father, husband, son or daughter, brother or sister. Finally, her mother agreed to donate her kidney. All investigations were completed, but just before the transplant, her mother refused to give her kidney,” added Dr Prakash.
At this point, her mother-in-law Vimla came forward and decided to donate her kidney instead. “She really surprised all,” said a family member. “After investigations, we found Vimla was fit to donate her kidney to Kavita. Post-surgery, now both the donor and the recipient are doing fine,” said senior consultant Dr Aditya Pradhan.
