More MLCs may leave Congress

In a house of 40, to get the Leader of Opposition status, a party should have a minimum strength of four
Hyderabad: With former PCC president D. Srinivas joining the TRS, it is being rumoured in Telangana Congress circles that four MLCs and an MP might also jump ship soon. Sources said that of the seven remaining MLCs in the Congress (eight defected last year), at least four are being contacted by the TRS leadership regularly to join the party.
In a house of 40, to get the Leader of Opposition status, a party should have a minimum strength of four. Presently the Congress has seven with Mr Shabbir Ali as Leader of Opposition.
However, sources said that within the next few days, four Congress MLCs would announce joining the TRS without resigning from their posts. Similarly, one of the five Congress Rajya Sabha members from the state is also being contacted by the TRS leadership to switch loyalties.
“With just 17 MLAs remaining in the Congress, there is no question of the party sending at least one candidate to the Rajya Sabha. Two seats will go to the ruling TRS, so it will not be surprising if someone who is not sure of renomination opts for TRS if promised renomination,” said a TRS source.
When contacted, Leader of Opposition in Council Shabbir Ali said, “This are all mind games of the TRS…all MLCs and MPs are loyal to the Congress.”
