Kochi police crack down on erring autorickshaws

During the inspection drives, the auto drivers will be decent

KOCHI: In view of widespread complaints against rogue rickshaws, city police authorities have tightened its noose on auto rickshaws in the city.

Police personnel have been deployed at various points in the city to check entry of autos without city permits and to ensure operating fare meters.

“During the one week after the drive was launched, more than 600 cases have been registered for not having fare meters, indecent behavior to passengers, not having city permits, refusing to make trips to certain areas and charging exorbitant charges. On Friday alone, 32 cases were registered by city traffic (west) authorities. The cases are being referred to RTO for cancelling the permits of vehicles,” said Baby Vinod, assistant commissioner of police (traffic-west).

Despite the efforts of authorities, number of complaints against the rickshaw drivers in the city is on the rise.

“During the inspection drives, the auto drivers will be decent. But after a short period, they will start fleecing of passengers,” said Ann Varghese, an IT professional.
