Government backed green drive to restore forest cover across Telangana

As part of the programme every year four crore saplings will be planted in the district
Warangal: Hundreds of students from various schools in the city took to the roads with placards raising slogans to preserve the environment by planting saplings. The students took part in the Telangana government’s flagship programme Hari-tha Haram which envisages increasing the forest cover in the state. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari and Assembly speaker Sirikonda Madhusudhana Chary officially launched the programme in Warangal at the Telangana Martyrs memorial at Adalat Centre. Students of various schools planted 2,000 saplings on the divider along the stretch of Hunter Road from Adalat Centre to Thimmapur at Khammam crossroads.
Launching the programme officially at the Adalat Centre, Assembly Speaker Sirikonda Madhusudhana Chary accused the previous governments of negligence in saving the environment and hailed Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for this initiative. Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari said the effects of deforestation can be seen in the rainy season with the diversity at which rainfall has been registered in various parts of the district. He said the main objective of the programme is to increase forest cover in the state from 24 per cent to 33 per cent and restore environmental balance.
As part of the programme every year four crore saplings will be planted in the district. Every village was set a target to plant 40,000 saplings. “Many places in the west side of the district have not registered adequate amount of rainfall. That is because the greenery and forest cover is very low there. Places like Jangaon and Cherial are facing a drought-like situation,” said Mr Srihari.
