Visakhapatnam: Tension and chaos prevailed at the beginning of the Army Recruitment Rally at Indira Priyadarshini Municipal Stadium here on Friday as over 9,000 Indian Army job aspirants turned out on the first day of the recruitment. Some aspirants suffered injuries following a stampede, attack by honeybees and police lathi charge.
Despite the arrangement made by the police and district officials, they had a tough time controlling the crowd and the cops had to resort to a mild lathi charge.
Sources said that the candidates jumped over enclosures and went berserk in an attempt to get tokens to take part in the physical test.
Project director of DRDA V. Satya Sai Srinivas was seen wielding the baton to contain the desperation of the candidates.
Police had requested Army officers to arrange a minimum of 20 token counters. But, they had set up only two counters that led to the aspirants losing patience.
Due to some miscommunication from the Army of-ficers, the candidate who had got a token for soldier general duty jumped the enclosures to get a token for soldier technical for soldier clerk that led to a stampede like situation.
Col. Pavan Sirohi told reporters that the candidates did not follow the rules and despite the notification, candidates from other districts had come to collect tokens.
With utter chaos on Friday, the officials decided to shift the venue to allot tokens to the Port Stadium.
Tokens will be issued to candidates from Narsipat-nam and Paderu division from 4 am at Port Stadium on June 4 and the test will be held on June 5 at Indira Priyadarshini Stadium. Similarly for candidates from Srikakulam district the dates are June 5 and 6, Tekkali division June 6 and 7, Palakonda division June 7 and 8, Vizianaga-ram division June 8 and 9, Parvatipuram June 9 and 10, West Godavari and Yanam June 10 and 11 and East Godavari and Krishna June 11 and 12.
