Wimbledon 2015: Andy Murray turns up heat on cool day

Federer, Kvitova too power ahead as eighth seed Makarova falls by the wayside

London: Roger Federer and Andy Murray breezed into the Wimbledon third round on Thursday as the women’s top 10 lost its fourth seeded player of the week. Rain had delayed the start of play just 24 hours after the mercury had climbed to a blistering 35.7 C. Roger Federer cruised ahead with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Sam Querrey of the USA while Murray brushed aside Robin Haase 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 in just 87 minutes.

Later, defending champion Petra Kvitova reached third round with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Japan’s Kurumi Nara. However, the women’s draw opened up even further when Russian eighth seed Ekaterina Makarova, a quarter-finalist in 2014, went down 2-6, 5-7 to unseeded Magdalena Rybarikova.

Sania-Martina win
Sania Mirza and her partner Martina Hingis advanced to the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan and Saisai Zheng of China. The Indo-Swiss combination converted four of the eight breakpoint opportunities that came their way, while their rivals failed to make use of the six chances and failed to cross the first hurdle.
