Differently-abled man makes record bid

Pulls off unprecedented 132 push-ups in one minute
COIMBATORE: Twenty-nine-year-old S.Gobeeswaran lost his left leg to a bad fall and botched treatment when he was just three. But unfazed by the disbility, Gobeeswaran made a valiant attempt to enter the Limca Book of Records by performing 132 alternative side pushups in one minute at Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Coimbatore. After months of practice, he came up with the one-minute stunner on June 28.
Earlier, in May, he performed 10,000 pushups in six hours at Coimbatore district level martial art show at Chinmaya Vidyalaya School. In 2014, he won a state championship in yoga under special category.
Tragedy struck Gobeeswaran at the age of three when he was playing with his friends in his village in Arupukottai in southern Tamil Nadu. His parents took him to a village doctor who simply bandaged his left leg without examining the injury.
After a few days, when the bandage was removed, Gobeeswaran realised that he couldn't move his left leg at all. The doctor who was not even a qualified MBBS declared it a polio attack, recalls Gobeeswaran. But he did not wallow in self-pity and fritter away his life. After completing a diploma in mechanical engineering from Government Polytechnic College, Coimbatore he devoted his time to learn hand movements. Four years ago, he joined Chi Kung-Fu Federation, Coimbatore.
“Since he can’t run like normal people, with the techniques of hand movement he can run now," said his master M. Vijay. He has been practicing a lot of hand exercises and yoga postures. He works as a fitness inspector in Chi Kung-Fu Federation, Coimbatore and also as a part-time employee in a courier company.
His day starts with rigorous practice of hand movement and yoga from 4 am to 9 am and ends with a five hour practice session in the evening. And his secret ambition is to smash many records. “I would like to see myself as a corporate gym instructor in future and a world record breaker,” he says.
