An ‘error in fashion’ that everyone loves

One also has to be very careful about how to move around in distressed jeans

Unlike the trends this year — aggressive ear jewellery, Cara Delevingne-like brows, 3D nail art etc. — that died soon after they were born, distressed jeans continue to be everybody’s favourite. Everybody, except parents who are bent on either fixing the “torn garment” or end up giving it a wash that make the jeans truly distressed!

“My grandmother always gets shocked when she spots me wearing distressed jeans. She insists on buying me a new pair of jeans,” says Nitasha Gaurav, Ranveer Singh’s stylist. When it comes to maintaining the jeans, she says, “One of the rules that people tend to overlook is that the jeans need to look grunge and for that you don’t need to throw it in a wash after every wear.”

One also has to be very careful about how to move around in distressed jeans. “If the distress is near the knee and you bend down, the rip rides further up and ends up reaching your mid-thigh. Therefore, you have to be very careful, especially if there is a rip near the crotch for example,” she adds.

Indrakshi Ria Pattanaik, who has styled Regina Cassandra, has had numerous funny experiences whenever she has worn jeans that look like they belong to either a “construction worker” or a “beggar”. “At a café, a person out of genuine concern asked me whether he could buy me a pair of jeans. My jeans were brand new,” says Indrakshi. “But then it’s this ‘error of fashion’ that makes the garment so beautiful,” she adds.

When it comes to taking care of them, Indrakshi suggests washing distress jeans once in two-three weeks. “I have had distress shorts, which after a wash in the machine, were nothing but patches of fabric. Best is to give them for dry cleaning,” she says.
