No personal enmity with SM Krishna: HD Deve Gowda

It was a trip down memory lane for former chief minister S.M. Krishna

Bengaluru: It was a trip down memory lane for former chief minister S.M. Krishna at a programme organised by Vokkaligara Sangha on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the birth centenary celebrations of former minister K.V. Shankare Gowda, Mr Krishna said, “We don’t know how politics works in Mandya. For example, if I had not defeated H.K. Veeranna Gowda in 1962 in Mandya, then probably, he would have become CM. However, as he was defeated, it paved the way for S. Nijalingappa. Then I lost the parliament election to K.V. Shankare Gowda.”

“Though I lost the elections, I never regretted it because I felt I lost to a deserving candidate like Shankare Gowda,” he said adding that Shankare Gowda was a visionary who strived hard to improve the education system by establishing well known institutes. Mr Krishna also felt it was not right on the part of the state government to seek postponement of the BBMP elections.

Former PM H.D. Deve Gowda termed the recent farmer suicides unfortunate. “Mandya is known as the land of sugar with more than four lakh acres under cultivation.

“Farmers are committing suicide as they are unable to bear the cultivation costs. If farmers are unable to pay debts and commit suicide, then a day may come when no one grows sugarcane,” he said adding political leaders need to work unitedly for the welfare of farmers.

Mr Gowda also made it clear that Mr Krishna was only his political rival and there was no personal enmity. “I and Mr Krishna will stand together to work for the progress of the state,” he said.
