VS Achuthanandan says UDF appeased fundamentalist minorities

The veteran leader had earlier in the day accused the UDF of appeasing minorities

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader V. S. Achuthanandan on Tuesday accused the UDF of appeasing the religious and fundamentalist forces.

Reacting to the Aruvikkara verdict, Mr Achuthanandan said that UDF's appeasement policy towards the religious and fundamentalist minorities had pushed a big section of the majority community towards the BJP fold. The UDF stand had helped the BJP collect such a huge number of votes in bypoll.

The veteran leader had earlier in the day accused the UDF of appeasing minorities. However, he tweaked his statement in the evening calling it appeasement of religious and fundamentalist forces.

He said the BJP’s surge was the biggest challenge for the secular fabric of the state. “The LDF is determined to move forward, fighting the communal forces,” he added. He accused the UDF of purchasing votes by distributing crores of rupees that it had collected through various corrupt activities.

Besides, the sympathy factor was unleashed across the constituency in a big way to attain the victory.

A section of political observers believe that the growth of BJP in the state had unnerved CPM in many places.
