Physically challenged show the way

Ms Sumadhi felt happy that her students chose her birthday for such an emulative initiative

THRISSUR: They decided to show the world a model. Twelve former inmates of Thrissur Care Home for Disabled Children donated blood on the old student's day on Sunday.

The camp, as part of the get-together held at their patron’s house at West Fort, was conducted for the blood bank of Thrissur district hospital.

They also relished the joy of singing and dancing. “We have physical barriers for serving the community but donating blood is not a problem for us,” said former inmate Joy Vallookaran. “The decision was unanimous”.

The day marked the birthday of their patron K. C. Sumadhi, who was then the superintendent of the Care Home. “The government hospital has no sufficient stock of blood compared to private hospitals. So we chose this hospital,” Mr Vallookaran said.

Social worker Sebi Francis, a former PRO with the IMA Blood Bank Thrissur, said it was the first time in the district and the second case in the state of the challenged people taking such an initiative.

“It’s an eye-opener for the society mostly believing that the physically challenged cannot donate blood,” he said. “It should inspire others too”.

Ms Sumadhi felt happy that her students chose her birthday for such an emulative initiative.

Meanwhile, the Care Home Trust is planning more such socially motivated activities.
