Accidental works of art

Artist Vijit Pillai brings his art to the city after a gap of two years

Vijit Pillai might have been shuttling between Bengaluru and Delhi, but the urge to bring his art to his city eventually brought him back to Hyderabad. The artist and former ad-man has brought eight art works to showcase here. “Digital art is something that is quite popular in other cities like Bengaluru and Delhi, but it still needs to pick-up here. And so art usually takes me to these two cities,” he says.

The eight works are a mix of various subjects. On a few canvases you find the Buddha, then there are elephants, a Ganesha and a painting of the Charminar in muted tones. “I create accidental artworks,” Vijit says, with a laugh. “When I start working, I never know how the piece will turn out to be. For instance take the work of the Charminar, there is a hand-pulled rickshaw right in front, but hand-pulled rickshaws are not from Hyderabad, they are from Kolkata. And the windows in the artwork are from Venice. So when I start working on a piece, I mix different elements from all my different experiences,” he explains.

While Vijit is popular for his digital artwork, he also does a mix of digital as well as hand-painted works. “There are two artworks where I have painted. There is one that is a digital piece and the others are a mix of digital and painted artworks,” he says. Vijit’s work is on display at the Radisson Blu Plaza.
