MS Dhoni makes supercilious offer to step down

Selectors will decide now unlike in the past when the BCCI president could overrule them
Chennai: It was in a somewhat supercilious tone that Mahendra Singh Dhoni offered to step down from the captaincy. However, to abdicate the ODI throne he wants a guarantee that Team India will do well without him at the helm. Besides being outplayed in both ODIs with bat and ball and in the field in Bangladesh, the Indian ODI skipper was also fined for his rugby style shoulder charge on a rookie fast bowler.
Victories and defeats are common and in Dhoni’s time Team India had seen both in fair proportion with a lot of highs and some miserable lows. The problem now is, as defeats start to hurt, Dhoni is pouncing on the media rather than looking at the problems in his team.
Good old ‘Bish’ Bedi may have found a novel solution for Dhoni in the form of yoga, now all the rage after 192 countries joined in the International Yoga Day fest on Sunday. “It’s the first time he is not making sense,” says ‘Phaji’ in his usual, colourful language. “Even barging into that bowler was very unbecoming of Dhoni. Clear signs of restlessness of mind and body. Perhaps dire need for him to go through yogic exercises,” the legendary spinner said in a lighter vein.
The signs are clear. Dhoni won’t go until he is nudged. His hold on the captaincy is, however, not so secure under the new dispensation in BCCI. The selectors will decide now unlike in the past when the BCCI president could overrule them. That provision still exists but the board might see it differently if the five wise men choose not to keep faith in Dhoni any longer. Perhaps, it is time they took that call.
