All top 17 MBBS candidates pick Madras Medical College

Toppers who secured admission in MMC scored 200 marks

Chennai: The second day of medical counselling for the general category ended on Saturday at the goverment medical college, Omandurar Estate, with a total of 502 seats allotted to from the 510 candidates called for counselling: Eight candidates were absent. The number of seats allotted to MBBS in government colleges is 501, as one went to MBBS - self financing college, PSG medical college.

All the top 17 candidates who had scored 200 secured their berths in Madras Medical College (MMC). Overall, 177 seats were allotted to MMC, while 133 went to Stanley medical college, 52 to Kilpauk medical college, while 43 went to Madurai medical college. “MMC was the preferred choice among the candidates. The seats of the city colleges were getting filled up pretty fast. Normally, we call around 600 candidates; but, today, we only callled 510 because of the cut-off marks,” said Dr Usha Sadhasivan, secretary of the selection committee.

The cut-off Saturday was 198.25. As we wanted to stop at that we called 510 candidates, Dr Usha added. The response this year has been better than last year, she said. “From tomorrow onwards, we will once again call 600 candidates,” said PRO T. Manoharan. Director of medical dducation, Dr S. Geethalakshmi, said, “The allotment orders have not been given yet and can be given only after the judgment is passed - that is Monday.”

This year’s topper Nishanthrajan K. was amongst the first to bag the seat. Extremely pleased after securing a seat at Madras Medical College, he said, “I am extremely happy and so are my parents as I got MMC. I had dreamt of it and my dream finally came true. I shall go out shopping today with my family in Chennai and then a family dinner, perhaps. However, I am still waiting for the allotment order. I hope it comes after Monday.”
