Chennai: In a first, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday unveiled 31 mobile dispensaries to attend to special children across the state. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa inaugurated the Rs 4.49 crore scheme through video conferencing at the secretariat.
An official release said the Chief Minister also declared open staff quarters constructed at a cost of Rs 54.75 lakh at Cuddalore and Rs 73.25 lakh worth quarters at Virudhunagar. She handed over the keys of the mobile dispensaries to drivers.
The release said the mobile dispensaries would provide physiotherapy, audiovisual training and speech therapy treatment. Social welfare minister B Valarmathi, commercial taxes and registration minister M. C. Sampath, chief secretary K. Gnanadesikan, and adviser to state government Sheela Balakrishnan, were present on the occasion.
The general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caretakers, S. Namburajan said the scheme was originally announced in the 2012-2013 budget. There were several other schemes that were announced and some of them were also launched, but the difficulty lay in implementation. Most of these schemes were handed over to trusts and NGOs for implementation. Due to lack of adequate publicity, the facilities did not reach the deserving, he said.
