Hyderabad: Several important roads in the city (in terms of traffic flow) are completely broken even as the monsoons are upon us.
A list of bad stretches maintained by the traffic police show that 70 per cent of the roads in the city are broken and riddled with potholes.
Currently, 86 stretches have potholes and there is 3,029 metre of bad stretches on city roads, making them unmotorable.
The situation hints at the traffic woes awaiting citizens once the monsoon showers are on in full swing as all identified stretches of bad roads are already resulting in traffic slowdown during peak hours.
Traffic police used to give a list of such roads to the GHMC each year till two years back, but since no action was being taken, the list is no longer being forwarded to the corporation.
In fact, out of the total list of waterlogging points (41 major and 166 minor) in the city that has been handed over the GHMC, less than 10 per cent of the works have been taken up.
Stretches like Maitrivanam, M.J. Junction, Malakpet, Uppal, Begumpet and ESI hospital, which are crucial links between many areas in the city, continue to slow down traffic movement to a crawl after even a small shower.
In Sultan Bazaar area at Afzalgunj junction and DM and HS junction, roughly 100 metre of road is completely broken down. Nampally again has about a 90-metre stretch including the Taj island, Ek Minar and Bazarghat junctions, which are not motorable.
From Kacheguda including Chaderghat junction, a 733-metre stretch has been identified as non-motorable.
In Toli Chowki, a 13-metre stretch, including Mughal-ka-Nala towards Attapur as well as towards Langer Houz, regularly cause traffic snarls.
“A 50-metre stretch at Nalakunta has been dug up by APTransco but the road has not been re-carpeted, giving rise to traffic snarls,” states an internal report prepared by the traffic department.
Also, Vidyanagar Y junction (connecting Hindi Mahavidyalaya to Adikmet), Habsiguda crossroads (connecting Uppal with Tarnaka and Nacharam), Indian Oil Petrol pump at Habsiguda (crucial U-Turn on Habsiguda main road) have road damages due heavy rains.
Banjara Hills and Jubilee hills have another 200 metre of unmotorable roads. These roads have turned into traffic nightmares during peak hours and with the Monsoon here, the stretches are expected to become worse.
