Four injured in blast at BDL, 1 critical

The police has not booked a case as no complaint was lodged

Hyderabad: Four workers were injured in a blast and fire at the Bharat Dynamics here on Saturday. The blast took place when workers were dumping explosive waste. The injured workers have been admitted to the Apollo Hospital DRDL. The condition of one person is critical. The BDL is an explosive manufacturing enterprise under the Ministry of Defence.

BDL officials said the incident occurred when a small quantity of “waste explosives” exploded while being disposed in a burning pit on the premises. “Four persons were injured. They are being treated at the Apollo Hospital DRDL,” an official BDL release said.

Inside sources said the protocol for the disposal of explosives was not followed and that caused the mishap. “The disposal is done under the supervision of a fire safety crew. It seems there was not enough hands and safety precautions were not taken while the procedure was being carried out,” the relative of an injured person said.

The police has not booked a case as no complaint was lodged.

“The incident occurred at around 10 am. The condition of casual employee Navin Goud is critical,” said south zone DCP V. Satynarayana. “We have made a GD entry. Once we receive a complaint we will start an investigation,” the DCP added.

The three others who were injured are S.P. Singh, a fire constable of CISF, Razaq, a driver of BDL and Md. Wahab. Police officials said the burning pit is a km away from production facilities. Officials said dumping of waste was routine process.
