Lycos Limited to bet on IoT devices

Overall size of the growing Internet of Things (IoT) market is estimated to be $15 trillion

Hyderabad: Lycos Limited, Hyderabad-based internet marketing company, previously known as Ybrant Digital, is planning to focus on tapping the growing Internet of Things market across the world, a senior official said. “There is a shift in how consumers use and access in Internet. Earlier, people used to connect to internet using desktops, later through laptops, and now via mobiles and tabs. But going forward, there would be no Windows to access Internet and almost all devices would access and would run on Internet. And this is called Internet of Things,” Suresh Reddy, chairman and chief executice of Lycos, told this newspaper. According to some estimates, he said, 50 billion devices would be connected to the Internet within 10 years and the overall size of the market would be around $15 trillion.

“Even if we manage to get a small share, it would be really big,” Mr Reddy said. In 2010, Ybrant Digital had acquired the world’s first internet search firm Lycos and renamed itself in 2011 after one of the oldest brands in the global internet space.

Lycos, hitherto an internet marketing company, has launched two wearable devices — a band and a ring — under its new brand Lycos Life. These devices would allow users to log in their apps and websites on their phones without passwords through the security manager and eliminates the need to remember passwords. It would also allow users to monitor steps, calories burned, speed and heart rate.
