Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) installed an illuminated day and night national flag at Chennai airport Wednesday. Chennai airport director Deepak Shastry hoisted the flag in the presence of NCC cadets along with other members of the AAI.
The tricolour had been hoisted at seven other airports in the country.The concept of this historical flagmast was conceived by MP and founder of Flag Foundation, Naveen Jindal. In 1995, while still a student, Naveen Jindal filed a petition challenging the restrictions contained in the Flag Code, with regard to the common public being allowed to fly the national flag on their premises.
In January 2004, the Supreme Court ruled in his favour.Mr Shastry said the installation of the flag post was meant to inspire patriotism and create wide visibility, since the airport is an important gateway.
