Stop degradation of Cauvery river: Pramoda Devi Wadiyar

Royalty requests TN and Karnataka authorities to protect river

Chennai: As long as river Cauvery is in good health, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will prosper. The moment she is neglected, troubles will compound, cautioned Maharani of Mysuru royal family Pramoda Devi Wadiyar. Responding to the Deccan Chronicle article titled Killing life-giving Cauvery published on Monday, the Maharani expressed concern over the physical state of Cauvery.

“She (Cauvery) is as sacred as the Ganga, Saraswathi or Yamuna. Cauvery is one of the sapthanadhis (seven holy rivers). She should be protected and kept clean. Wadiyar dynasty, which ruled Mysuru Kingdom that included several parts of present Tamil Nadu, revered Cauvery and ensured that the economic growth doesn’t harm the river eco-system in anyway”.

She has requested the bureaucracy of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to be extra vigilant and prevent further degradation of Cauvery. “After all, we are humans and need water to drink to survive. If we pollute the life-giving Cauvery, we will be snatching away our own source of livelihood. As a citizen, I am really interested in seeing things being sorted out”.

The Mysuru Wadiyar kings legacy is inter-linked with Cauvery and they are very popular in Tamil Nadu for their contribution and the kingdom had its reach till Tiruchirapalli. The 25th ruler of Wadiyar dynasty and late Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar (1940-1950) was the Governor of Tamil Nadu between 1964-66 and the former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, was quoted saying he was the best Governor in the country.

Annamalai University honoured Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar with doctorate in literature who declared open the new auditorium building of the Madras Music Academy. The Mysuru kings have also patronised Kancheepuram and contributed immensely for its development, said Mr Raja Chandra, senior member of Mysuru royal family and renowned historian.
