Kerala model of education the goal

35 lakh children go back to school after two-month vacation

KOZHIKODE: “The government is in an attempt to bring a Kerala model of development in the education sector,” education minister P. K. Abdu Rabb said while addressing a gathering during the inaugural ceremony of the state-level Praveshnolsavam at Government UP School, Kambalakaddu, in Wayanad district on Monday.

“Complete development of a student is what our government has been trying to attain for the last many years,” he further said.

With the academic enrichment, extra-circular activities including sports were being given equal importance. Excluding Classes IX and X, the syllabi of all other classes have been improvised and by next one year, Classes IX and X will also get the full-fledged syllabi. One of the major aims of the Kerala model of education will be to qualify all students for higher studies, the minister said.

Around 35 lakh children were back to the school, apart from the new entrants numbering around three lakh. The exact number of newcomers will be known only after the headcount, which will be done on the sixth working day of the academic year.

Just like previous years, the supply of textbooks in government schools has been delayed and the minister himself pointed out to the delay in printing the books. It should also to be noted that the strength of students in government schools in Kerala has declined this academic year. The first headcount held last week showed that the number of students in state-run and aided schools has fallen by 1.21 lakh.
