AK Antony to launch UDF poll convention on Saturday

KPCC leadership is keen on settling issues in Vithura panchayat before Antony arrives

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leader A. K. Antony will inaugurate the UDF convention in Aruvikkara on Saturday.

Congress leadership is expected to hold talks with the local leaders who are yet to accept the candidature of K. S. Sabarinathan, son of former Speaker G. Karthikeyan. Panchayat-level meetings have been scheduled for today and tomorrow.

KPCC leadership is keen on settling issues in Vithura panchayat before Antony arrives. Local leaders had expressed displeasure when Sabarinathan’s candidature was announced last week.

Though KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran reined in dissenting KSU leaders immediately, the dissent at the local level was still brewing. A Congress MLA criticised the KPCC leadership for not finding a solution to the trouble started during the organisational elections. Sources close to Antony told DC that he was expected to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on June 4.

“As of now, Antony is expected to return to New Delhi on Sunday after inaugurating the convention. He will come to Aruvikkara again once the campaign reaches crescendo. Sometimes national leaders are also expected to arrive for campaigning,” they said.
