BJP stays undecided over bypoll

BJP State president Tamizhisai Soundararajan said decision would be taken in due course

Chennai: The BJP is still undecided as to whether or not to contest the R.K. Nagar bypoll scheduled for June 27. However, it is keen on fielding an NDA candidate. The party on Friday started consultations with ally DMDK.in the matter. Speaking to reporters after emerging from a meeting with DMDK founder Vijayakant at his party headquarters here, BJP State president . Tamizhisai Soundararajan said the two parties had held “preliminary discussions” on the issue of contesting the by-election and that a decision would be taken in due course.

When persisted, she replied the decision would be announced in three days. Earlier, the BJP had unsuccessfully contested the bypoll in Srirangam. AIADMK’s P. Vetrivel resigned as MLA of Radhakrishnan Nagar on May 17 to facilitate the election of Ms. Jayalalithaa from the constituency.

In case the BJP-led NDA decides to contest, it will be the only major opposition party attempting to take on the mighty AIADMK in the absence of other political parties, particularly the DMK. The DMK had announced that it will not field a candidate. The TNCC is expected to toe the DMK line.
