National Green Tribunal to monitor lakes

The order was challenged in the High Court by filing a writ petition

Hyderabad: The National Green Tribunal is to depute a team of experts to check and ensure that the works undertaken by the state government is limited to the repairs of the sluices, and there is no unnecessary dewatering of the Hussainsagar. It may also order such a team to give its report expeditiously, stated the order on May 26.

Earlier, the NGT passed orders restraining carrying out any construction in or around the Hussainsagar lake. However, the order was challenged in the High Court by filing a writ petition.

The High Court has passed interim orders, permitting the government to undertake the works of de-silting the lake and improvement of sluices of water bodies.

The government, in its plea, stated there was no construction activity, only some repair works being carried out. These works are necessary to maintain the sluices properly. The government said that because of neglect, the sluices are not properly functional.

Following this, the High Court permitted the respondents to undertake such cement and concrete works as may be necessary to repair the sluices for their proper maintenance. Also, if those repairs needed some water to be released from the lake, it would be permissible.
