It’s official: Yaduveer to be crowned on May 28

Ceremony will be a private affair with over 1000 family members participating

Mysuru: New Mysuru Maharaja Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will ascend the Bhadrasana, a silver throne, on May 28 between 9.30 am and 10.35 am at the Kalyana Mantapa of Mysuru Palace. This was announced by Maharani Pramoda Devi Wadiyar on Monday. The coronation of Mr Yaduveer as the 27th Maharaja of the 600-year-old Wadiyar dynasty will be spread over two days on May 27 and 28.

“Ascending the Bhadrasana is a pre-requisite for one to ascend the golden throne. He will ascend the golden throne only during Navarathri Utsav,” she said. On the coronation, she said, “The ceremony will be carried out as per tradition as it was done 400 years ago, without any change. The dates of the ceremony were finalised only on May 20 followed by the consent of the gurus and family members. We had to rush as there were no good dates till November and since the ceremony was supposed to be held before Dasara”.

Due to lack of space, the ceremony will be a purely private affair with over 1000 members including family members and relatives participating. “We are yet to finalise the list of dignitaries. We have not printed invitations due to time constraints. Hence we have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inviting him to participate in the event. Yaduveer’s fiance Trishika Kumari will also participate. The royal family members will follow the community dress code. Arrangements will be made for a live relay on a 20 feet LED screen, seating arrangements will be made for over 5000 people outside the Palace to witness the coronation ceremony on May 28. There will be a reception at 7 pm at the main Darbar hall for the general public and well wishers of the royal family. Since Yaduveer is expected to visit all 15 temples in the palace premises before sunset, he will move around in a car at 3 pm,” she said.

When asked if her nephew Mr Kanthraj Urs who had rebelled against the choice for the throne, will be part of the event, she said, “It is upto them. We are inviting them”.
Dasara veteran Balarama will be participating in all Dasara rituals. “On May 27, various homas and rituals will be carried out, followed by an oil bath and kankana dharna and on the same day Paada pooja of Parakaala math guru Sir Abhinava Vaageesha Brahmatantra Swatantra Parakala Swami will be held. On May 28, the coronation ceremony will be held followed by a few homas including Lakshminarayana, Umamaheswari, Vani Brahma and Srirama Taraka” she said.

Asked about the late scion Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar’s coronation, she said, the ceremony was held much before her wedding when she was doing her MA and she was not part of the ceremony. The coronation was held on October 16, 1974 soon after the death of late Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar. Since the coronation was held on Vijayadashami day itself, Mr Srikantadatta Wadiyar ascended the Bhadrasana and Golden throne on the same day, she said.

Asked if she had thought of negotiating with the state government on palace property issues, she said, “We will think about it once the ceremony is over”. Mr Yaduveer who later joined his mother at the press meet was asked how he felt about the occasion and replied, “I feel good, excited and very honoured”.

When asked if he had plans to pursue higher education, he said he would stay at the palace till Dasara was over. On whether he had thought of entering politics, Mr Yaduveer replied that a lot of thought had to go into it.
