Hyderabad: Gold worth more than Rs 2 crore was seized from a man at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Monday. The man landed at the airport by a Dubai-bound Emirates flight. Based on credible information, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Customs Officials of RGI Airport, conducted an operation and apprehended the man, when he was trying to smuggle in the precious metal. It weighed approximately eight kilograms.
“We have taken two security staffers belonging to GMR into custody when they were trying to help the man smuggle the gold. He had hidden the metal in his bag and sought the help of the security persons,” said a senior customs official. “People who have stayed abroad for six months are eligible to pay excise duty and bring gold up to one kilogram. People who are not eligible and those who want to evade tax try to smuggle it in illegally. We are creating public awareness on this,” said the official.
The accused, including the two security staff were handed over to the custody of DRI for further investigation.
