Abandoned, injured UP woman delivers baby

Fareedha, who was pregnant, was found with a broken foot and fractured thigh on a pavement near Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital four months back. It was a rebirth for her for which she said she was indebted to the Almighty as it was a moment of hope after a pile of dark and frightening days.

Noorjahan and her mother are in good health – thanks to the efforts of an NGO, and a group of like-minded people for adopting her and treating her at a home care centre in Thiruverkadu.

“I am thankful to all for all they have done to help me in the condition where I was not even able to walk and identify people around me and explain my past. I thank Allah, the Almighty, for giving me the most precious gift in my life,” she said.

On March 9 a school student noticed her and informed Udavum Karangal, an NGO that takes care of abandoned people. At the homecare centre she revealed that she hailed from Purena village of Santh Kabeer Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh and her husband, Shabeer Ahammed, a transport driver from Mumbai, neglected her and due to which she had to leave her hometown for Chennai in search of a job.

However, according to P. Vidyaakar, founder of Udavum Karangal, she was not able to recall the rest of events except that she was pushed out of a train in Chennai and later taken to the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital by some unknown people. “When we rescued her, she was in mental trauma and all that she remembered was that she was pushed out of the train by someone who tried to physically harass her and it was after days of intensive care and treatment at a private clinic that she was able to reveal some details,” he said.

Apart from Noorjahan, Fareedha has one son and two daughters, who stay at her home in Purena village. When we contacted them, we understood that her husband was reluctant to have anything to do with her and that her children were being looked after by her family, he added. Fareedha is now taking rest at the home care center at Thiruverkadu and has decided to continue with embroidery and stitching for the time being and has not decided the future course of work, the NGO members said.
