NDA government to focus on power, road and rail for 2nd year

Government to pump in more money to improve infrastructure

New Delhi: Even as the Modi government completes one year, the Prime Minister’s Office has already started working on the roadmap ahead. Sources said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed top officials in the PMO to focus on “unprecedented growth” in the three core sectors of power, roads and railways” in the year ahead.

The PM, sources added, has made it clear that these three will remain the priority areas for the NDA government and even if investments from the private sector and from public-private-partnership model remains sluggish in these areas, the government will pump in more money to improve infrastructure.

“The PM’s view is that if we bring in faster growth in key infrastructure, sectors like railways, roads and power, it will have a major impact on the overall growth of the economy. These have been identified as the target and focus areas for the next one year of the NDA government. So even while the government will highlight the achievements of the first year of the Modi government, PM’s core team is not resting and has already started work for the year ahead,” a senior government official said.

Sources claimed that the PM has been personally monitoring these sectors and the PMO is constantly in touch with the ministries of railways, surface transport and power and coal as to how implementation of projects can be expedited further. The focus of the Modi government will be on greater penetration of highways and rail networks in addition to improving infrastructure and railway facilities.

As part of the strategy, the PMO is also working on an ambitious plan to identify some of the main cities across the country that will get power 24 hours in the next one year. A blueprint is already being prepared as to how these cities can be completely insulated from any power cuts even in event of a major disruption like grid failure.
