Three from Madurai held for city theft

One of the accused Ranjith was arrested while the hunt is on to arrest the other thieves

Chennai: Ten days after a home alone woman was robbed at knife-point at her residence in VGP Layout, off Palavakkam, the Neelankarai police arrested three persons for the armed robbery on Saturday. On May 11, two persons gained entry into the residence of Tamilarasi on 2nd Main road, VGP Layout, Palavakkam, pretending to be distant relatives visiting her to invite her for a wedding.
“The maid allowed the two men inside, believing that they were actually relatives as they mentioned the names of Tamilarasi’s in-laws,” a police officer said.

Tamilarasi offered something to drink to the duo, initially believing them, but later when she showed signs of suspicion, the duo pulled out a knife, forced her to part with her jewels and escaped.
Special teams which were formed to track the suspects camped at Madurai and picked up the trio - Ranjith alias Maruthupandian, (21) of Sholavandhan, Madurai, a driver, Guhan, (46), of Vilangudi, Madurai, and Pandi (23) of Dindigul, both decorative tile workers, the police said.

“A six-digit number scribbled by Guhan, left at the scene of crime, helped us track them. We tried several combinations, initially suspecting it to be a phone number and then found it to be the account number of one of the accused,” inspector S. Dinakaran said.Investigations revealed that the thieves knew the names of Tamilarasi’s relatives as one of them, Ranjith, worked as a driver for her in-law Dhanapal and had visited the house twice.

“After learning that the woman lives alone, Ranjith hatched a plan along with his younger brother and engaged Guhan and Pandi to execute the robbery. The duo even did a reccee on May 10,” Dinakaran added. The thieves were picked up from Madurai on Friday and brought to the city. The stolen jewellery a 10.5 sovereign gold chain was recovered in tact and the two-wheeler used for the crime was seized, the police said. A hunt is on to arrest the other thieves.
