Separate platform for Adyar dustbins

Fund of Rs17.89 lakh has been allocated to make separate platform for dustbin

Chennai: Over 120 streets in Adyar will soon have a separate cement platform for garbage bins, clearing space for pedestrians to use the footpath. A fund of Rs17.89 lakh has been allocated for this. Councilor of division 175, Kokila Kanna, says, “The garbage bins have been so far placed on the footpath and this was opposed by pedestrians. The wastes from the bins were also pulled out by stray dogs and strewn all over the pavement, troubling pedestrians.”

Now, separate platforms for the plants will be constructed next to the pedestrians’ platforms and the bins will be kept inside the platforms. This will prevent the bins being dragged from one placed to the other place unnecessarily by local people who do not want the bins in front of their houses, she adds. Chairperson of the Indira Nagar Women’s Association and resident of the 13th Cross street, Vasantha Ganesan says, “People have been dragging these bins to various places and there were incidents where these bins were dragged even to the middle of the road, making it difficult for residents to take out four-wheelers from their houses. Such issues have been solved now and vehicles can now use the road properly.”

A fund of Rs 6.36 lakh has been allocated for the new platforms for garbage bin in Kasturba Nagar, Rs5.17 lakh for Gandhi Nagar and Rs6.36 lakh for Indira Nagar. An official in the local body says, “The initiative is being taken up in various streets in Adyar zone for the last two months. It will also give a neat look to streets.”
