Heat block: Commuters troubles

Everyday, close to 9 lakh people travel by bus in the city
Hyderabad: With the mercury rising, the bus and train commuters are feeling the heat. Everyday, close to 9 lakh people travel by bus in the city. The lack of bus shelters is a major problem for them.
There are roughly 1,000 bus shelters and about 700 bus bays in the twin cities. Most of them do not have even a single bench or waiting area for passengers. People are often forced to face the soaring temperatures sometimes for half an hour to 45 minutes at a stretch before the bus to their required destination arrives.
RTC buses and MMTS trains are the primary mode of transport for a large number of professionals as well as students. Apart from an estimated 4 lakh students who depend on RTC buses to reach their colleges located in the peripheral areas of the city, another four to five lakh commuters travel on routes like Moinabad-Chevella, Medchal, Pattancheru, Mehdipatnam-Moinabad etc. The RTC runs 800 services in the IT hub from Gachibowli and Financial District up to Maheshwaram alone. But most of these services are operated from bus bays on the main roads and there are no amenities at these bus bays.
The frequency of buses from Masab Tank to HCU is not very high and one may need to wait for up to an hour for a bus on this route. In this heat, it is very difficult. It can cause severe headache, said Varsha Ignesias, a student.
