Colleges rush to get lab tools before check

Items worth Rs 200-crore ordered by colleges
Hyderabad: Private engineering colleges are on a laboratory equipment buying spree with inspections by the JNTU-Hyderabad in progress. The colleges in the state have given orders for various equipment, estimated to be worth more than Rs 200 crore, apart from signing up faculty from other cities like Vijayawada and Chennai.
However, the early commencement of inspections caught the colleges off-guard and many of them haven’t even received their consignments yet. JNTU Hyderabad sources said many engineering colleges may fail to make the cut this year as authorities have already seen several “ghost colleges.”
Nearly 143 private engineering colleges were disaffiliated last year by the JNTU-Hyderabad for failing to satisfy the All India Council of Technical Education norms on infrastructure and faculty. About 17 engineering colleges were also booked later for hiring bogus faculty members during last year’s inspections.
“The value of the orders also suggests how much some of the private engineering colleges lacked in terms of infrastructure. The vendors are finding it hard to deliver such big orders within a short span of time,” the owner of an engineering college and member of the Telangana Engineering and Professional College Managements’ Association said, asking not to be named. The inspections are to be completed before the TS Eamcet counselling begins.
