Summer Fashion: Denim diva

Find out why the denim diva is the “it” look this Spring-Summer

In the world of fashion, not every glamorous thing has to be from the red carpet. Thankfully, there is something called casual chic, which comes handy for everyday dressing with comfort playing a key role in it. This season, the comfiest fabric of all time — denim — has made a stylish comeback, and we give you the low-down on how to be a denim diva this summer.

From long and short dresses to shirts, crop tops, overalls and culottes — denim is being re-invented by designers in all possible ways. Dolly Sidhwani and Anand, of the label Noble Faith, elaborate on how this wardrobe staple can be worn in various ways this year. They say, “Chic denim dresses and culottes are trending big time this year. Faded denims with a white tank top or a classic denim shirt dress with gladiators is one of the perfect summer looks. Dungarees with a crop top inside and sneakers could be an easy laid-back style for S/S ’15. Using lighter and softer denim fabrics with lace makes for a romantic, feminine feel. Denims can be paired with almost everything—from knits, luxe, sheer textures to prints, denim A-line long skirts with bold silhouettes, feminine denim dresses, denim dip-dyed shirts, edgy shirt dresses, lace and faded denims, playsuits, as well as the washed out/bleached look, work well for this season.”

We’re in the midst of an incredibly fun and adventurous denim moment, remarks Anika Churiwala of the label Aneehka. She says, “Denim has made a major comeback this season in various ways like jumpsuits, rompers, short dresses, sexy maxis and also a wide range of bottoms like the boyfriend pants, cigarette pants or even the flare pants that have hit the NYC street fashion. A glimpse of the look is seen here too. The shredded dark denim wash jumpsuit is a very playful outfit and looks great when teamed with Converse sneakers. A denim dress or a long maxi looks great with strappy sandals and minimal accessory.”

She adds, “Whether the fabric is silk, lace, georgette or cotton, designers have paired it with almost everything because denims don’t go wrong with anything. The new innovations include ripped jeans, clean jeans, embellished short denim dresses, ombré denim gowns and dark wash denim jumpsuits.”

For designer duo Lecoanet Hemant, the glamour quotient is revisited in denim this time. They say, “The denim diva look is glamorous and inventive. To get this look, one can wear a denim dress with a short neck scarf knotted around the neck or accessorise it with elegant belts and high heels. One can also wear denim shirts with a pocket kerchief and or jewellery like a brooch and a few strings of pearls. Pairing it up with shiny metallic materials is certainly an option and so is it with sheers and classic styles.”

However, Manjula Gandhi of Numero Uno Clothing Ltd, defines a crisp look with denim shorts and tie-knot shirts for this season. She says, “The latest innovation in denim are ‘Jog denims’ that are flexible and allow better movement. These can be worn to the gym, for a jog or even outdoor activities, thereby increasing the utility of denims. Trims like gross grain and leather are being heavily used in denims for this season. In terms of colours, shades like blue, black, rust, brown, green and grey are among the favourites.”
