Though the present rain has come as a relief at the peak of summer, when the mercury usually hovers around 40 degree Celsius, it has brought along some attendant inconveniences such as inundated roads. Hut dwellers are suffering a lot.

This morning, Tiruchy and suburbs experienced heavy rains and this affected the normal life of people; besides, rainwater entered huts situated in the low-lying areas of the city. A portion of a house collapsed at Ambedkar Nagar at Srirangam due to the heavy rain.

Power supply was affected in many parts in and around the city, especially on the East Boulevard road as a newly-erected electric transformer collapsed. Upon information, Tangedco employees arrived at the spot, repaired the transformer and restored power supply in the area.

Vehicular traffic through Melapudur subway in the city was suspended almost for the whole day today, as there was about 6 feet of rainwater in the subway. Vehicular traffic was diverted through the Goods Shed road.

Devotees who went to Sri Jambukeshwara Akilandeshwari temple at Tiruvanaikovil, Tiruchy, suffered as rainwater entered all corridors of the temple.

Some farmers are happy that standing crops such as banana will benefit. “Apart from a beneficial effect on standing crops, the widespread rain will help us tide over the shortage of fodder as grazing grounds sport a greener look now,” farmers said.

Most farmers, especially paddy farmers across the Cauvery delta region, are waiting to harvest their kuruvai paddy. They are worried as rainwater flooded the paddy fields and the paddy crop was submerged.
