Telangana to import teak seeds to mitigate shortage

Telangana will get teak seeds from Burma and African countries
Hyderabad: If Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao has his way, Telangana will get teak seeds from Burma and African countries to meet the shortage at home. Mr Rao, who plans to give a big push to Haritha Haaram programme in the state with the onset of monsoon, has set an ambitious target of raising 320 crore saplings of various varieties in the next four years.
Stating that increasing greenery in the state is one of the top priorities of the TRS government, the CM instructed officials to ensure planting of 160
crore saplings under Social Forestry and an equal number in the forest area.
“I want you to see that saplings are not only planted but also survive which is very important. Please go in for fruit bearing trees in forest areas for the benefit of the public at large,” he reportedly told a meeting of forest and senior officials.
He added, “There is acute shortage of teak wood. If needed, we should get teak seeds from Burma and African countries. Please involve people from all walks of life in the Harita Haaram programme.”
Promising full financial support for the programme, the CM also said he would convene a meeting of collectors, forest officials and others on May 11 in Hyderabad to prepare an action plan for Haritha Haaram. “You have to raise the required quantity of saplings for this year, next year and subsequent years. The saplings should be ready before the onset of monsoon,” he said.
