Bengaluru demolition: Hold the bulldozers, play fair, Mr CM!

The government itself has ploughed in crores of rupees to expand Majestic bus stand

BENGALURU: If the state government follows what it preaches on the demolition of all encroachment on tank beds, will the first building to come down be its own office on Queens Road - Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) constructed on Miller Tank bed?

What will be the fate of bustling Majestic bus stand which has risen on the famous Kempambudhi lake, or, for that matter, Kanteerava stadium, built on Sampangiramanagar lake? The government has ploughed in crores of rupees to expand Majestic bus stand and in recent times, the Namma Metro inter-change in the Majestic area. Will government earthmovers level the brand new interchange?

Malleswaram MLA S. Suresh Kumar, enjoying the government’s predicament - it has little choice but to follow the Supreme Court directive - says “when the government itself has erred, what moral justification does it have to bulldoze homes built by the tax-paying lower and middle class.” Millers Lake, incidentally was a thriving waterbody as late as 1988,

when residents of the area recall how it overflowed that year and they had to be ferried to safety on rubber boats. The prominent landmark residential development National Games Village is also built on a tank bed. No sign of any earthmovers there yet!!
