Woman’s ashes ‘stolen’ by lover

Cops confused as ashes not ‘valuable property’
Hyderabad: Amberpet police has started an inquiry following a complaint that a few people “stole” the ashes after the cremation of a woman, from a graveyard near the Musi river.
As per the complaint, a 22-year-old B.Tech graduate named E. Maheswari had committed suicide after her family opposed her marriage to her lover. After her body was cremated, Maheswari’s lover named Sai Krishna and his family members allegedly took away her ashes for final rites.
Cops are confused as no “valuable property” has been stolen. Police said Maheswari had consumed a cleaning agent on April 22 in a bid to end her life. She was reportedly depressed as her family had refused to accept her relationship with Mr Sai Krishna and had not agreed to their marriage.
On Monday, Mr Sai Krishna and his relatives allegedly entered the cremation ground and took away Maheswari’s ashes stating that “the ashes belonged to them.”
Maheswari’s father, the complainant, alleged that Mr Sai Krishna convinced the cremation ground caretaker to give him the ashes by lying to him.
“We have received a complaint from the father of the deceased, and we have started an investigation. The allegations are being verified,” said Amberpet police inspector P. Venkat Ramana.
