No fresh IMFL license granted, Puducherry government tells Madras high court

The policy in question assailed has been repealed and there were no fresh licenses being granted
Chennai: The Puducherry government has informed the Madras high court that no fresh Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) licenses were being granted by it. Senior special government pleader T. Murugesan stated this when a Public Interest Litigation from V. Perumal, secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Puducherry, came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam.
Murugesan said the policy in question assailed has been repealed and there were no fresh licenses being granted for liquor. Recording the same, the bench disposed of the PIL. According to petitioner, the Puducherry government had on June 12, 1989 decided that the number of IMFL shops should be frozen at the then existing level in all the four regions of Union Territory.
In pursuance to the same, no fresh licenses were issued to any private individual since 1989. However, by a G.O dated February 22, 2010, the Puducherry government had lifted the ban and granted 90 new IMFL licenses. Since the action of the government affected the society at large, the petitioner filed the present petition.
