New Delhi: With the suicide by a farmer from Rajasthan in public glare putting the spotlight back on agrarian crisis, the BJP government seems to be very cautious about not sending a wrong message to the peasant community with delaying the tabling of controversial Land Acquisition Bill, which Opposition bills as “anti-farmer,” in Parliament this week.
The government had earlier planned to introduce the legislation in the lower house, where it enjoys absolute majority, and take it to the Rajya Sabha where it has a depleted strength. “Things would be clear only next week as the session nears its end. The Lok Sabha will be adjourned on May 8 and the Rajya Sabha session ends on May 13. So as things go, decisions will be taken,” a government source said.
There is an opinion within the government that tabling the Land Bill during the time when there is much focus on agrarian crisis would be counter-productive as the Opposition would try to corner the administration.
