IIM fraud accused to be presented in court

The fraud was exposed by DC in a news report published on June 28, 2013

KOCHI: The CBI will present Mohammad Aslam and Abbas Segaum Begue, arrested in connection with the tampering of the entrance examination of Indian Institute of Management, in the court on Monday.

The two arrested from UP by a CBI team a few days ago, were brought to Kochi by train on Sunday. The CBI team will submit an application in the court on Monday seeking their custody for further interrogation.

They acted as middlemen of Mohammad Aftaque, 34, a native of Ambedkar Nagar in UP and the key accused in the case. Aftaque was arrested from Lucknow on March 24.

The preliminary investigations found that the results of 80 students who appeared for the entrance test held in 2012 were manipulated after collecting Rs 2 lakh to Rs 15 lakh for inflating marks.

Aftaque was an employee of Web Weavers, the UP based web management firm which was in charge of publishing results supplied by Prometric, the US based agency that conducted the exam.

The fraud was exposed by DC in a news report published on June 28, 2013. Though the Kunnamangalam police investigated the case earlier, it was later handed over to the CBI in view of the interstate links of the accused.
