Conduct Hyderabad civic polls by December 15: HC tells govt

‘The court cannot turn a Nelson's eye to the delaying tactics’

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Monday directed Telangana government to conduct elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) by December 15.

The bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P V Sanjay Kumar refused to consider the state government's argument for delaying the elections.

At one point, the Chief Justice questioned the government's desire to hold the polls at the earliest.

"If you have the will to usher in a democratic set-up in the Corporation, you can do it," he said in response to repeated requests by the Advocate General for more time.

The Chief Justice gave various examples as to how people dodge the issues and said "the court would certainly consider your genuine problems but it cannot turn a Nelson's eye to the delaying tactics."

The judges gave the government time till October 31 for completion of reorganisation of wards and provision of reservations and further 45 days to the State Election Commission to hold the elections.

The entire process should be completed by December 15, said the Chief Justice.
