12 per cent quota may delay hiring Muslims and STs

Muslims, STs to demand employment
Hyderabad: The 12 per cent reservation promised by the TRS government to Muslims and STs in Telangana has put it under pressure. Muslims and ST organisations want it to take up fresh recruitment drives in the government sector only after clarity comes over the 12 per cent quota. The government had appointed two Commissions of Inquiry in early March to study the socio-economic and educational status of Muslims and STs for implementing 12 per cent quota.
Though six-month duration was given to these panels, they are expected to submit a report by June-end based on which the government will take a call on reservations. While the government is planning to fill nearly one lakh vacancies in various departments through TS Public Service Commission soon under pressure from students and unemployed, who are on the warpath protesting the failure of the government in issuing a single job notification so far even after coming to power nearly 11 months ago, Muslims and ST organisations too are demanding that the government should implement the promised 12 per cent quota with immediate effect and should begin with recruitments to be done by TSPSC.
There are apprehensions about the 12 per cent quota, as the courts had already raised objections with regard to 4 per cent quota for Muslims under BC-E category, implemented by YSR government and a case is pending in the Supreme Court now. The TS government has recently decided to be a party to this case in the Supreme Court and argue in favour of quota for Muslims.
However, Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao has been trying to allay these fears stating that the TS government would follow Tamil Nadu by exceeding the overall 50 per cent quota on reservations for all categories prescribed by the Supreme Court. Mr Rao said that TN has raised reservation quota to 70 per cent by making special legislations in the Assembly. Official sources said the state is waiting for reports to be submitted by the commissions.
