Avengers cash in with a vengeance

According to reports, the film opened with a massive Rs 10.95 crore collection
There might be lessons to be learnt for Indian filmmakers from Avengers: Age Of Ultron. The Hollywood superhero flick has beaten collections of even the biggest films with the biggest star cast in just two days. According to reports, the film opened with a massive Rs 10.95 crore collection. By Saturday, collections rose to Rs 11.85 crore in the domestic box office. This is higher than the collections made by the likes of NH10, Shamitabh and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy.
Though it is not rocket science to peg the collections to the huge fan following in the country, the fans here sure have some worthy insights into why this film rules the box office.
Real lessons from fans
Die-hard fan Rafi Yahya Syed puts it into perspective as he says, “The film presented the superheroes, not like gods who are above our reach, but a team of super-powered cool dudes (and dudettes). I love them for their insanely universal politics yet real-life emotions.”
Avengers steals T’wood’s thunder?
The film’s relatively biggest competitor in Tollywood at present would be Sudhir Varma-Naga Chaitanya’s Dohchay, which released in around 800 centers. According to reports, 65 per cent of tickets were booked in advance on the opening day. But all reports suggest that if Naga Chaitanya is hoping to make this his big 2015 hit, he probably needs to wait it out till Avengers is done.
Meanwhile, the other big film in theatres is Allu Arjun’s S/o Satyamurthy, which managed to cross the Rs 70 crore mark in 15 days. But then again, Avengers had Rs 11.85 crore in just two days.
Tarimela Srikanth, general manager (operations), Prasads says, “Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of the biggest summer releases and has a great fan following. You have all the characters — Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America etc., fighting to save the world. So the movie is being frequented by a lot of youngsters. We had allocated around 17 shows on the first day and all shows were full. Now, we have around nine shows.
If a Pawan Kalyan or a Mahesh Babu-starrer releases, even then we would allocate more number of screens to it. It depends on what movies are releasing on that particular week,” he says adding, “But this is not going to affect the business of Naga Chaitanya-starrer Dohchay, which had a very good opening. The audience of both the movies are different — they have different tastes, choices etc., so we can’t say that Avengers is going to hit their collections.”
And our own stars, Sonakshi Sinha and Varun Dhawan, added to the promotional frenzy with their confessions on how much they love the film. Cameron Luke Saripalli, 20, a comics lover says, “This film stayed true to the original storyline. Despite there being 13 superheroes, every character was given a substantial role. It is a movie that anybody could go to, be it children or adults.”
