Visakhapatnam police remains offline

City police department has no official website or pages on social media
Visakhapatnam: The city police department is conspicuous by its absence on the web world. Despite being the biggest city in Andhra Pradesh with over 3,500 police personnel at 25 police stations in Vizag, the city police does not have an official website.
It may be recalled that the department had launched a website for traffic police wing, which has not been updated for a long time now, and even the cyber crime police has no page on any of the social media sites to make citizens aware about crimes.
Meanwhile, what is noteworthy is the use of technology by cops of all big cities, including Vijayawada in AP. The police department in many cities have official websites and Facebook pages to acquaint citizens with the latest trends of crimes and also seek feedback from the public for effective policing.
However, people in Vizag have been waiting for such opportunity to share various issues with cops via the internet.
Though the city cops launched a website vizagtrafficpolice.com around two years ago and also opened a page on Facebook, they failed to keep the citizens updated.
The AP government too launched two online devices iClik (Instant-Complaint Login Internet Kiosk) and Abhayam (safety 4 sure), a mobile application as a pilot project in Vizag this year to encourage women to lodge grievances without visiting police stations.
Sharing his woe, B. Tech graduate Ch Anil Kumar said, “I searched for Vizag police website to share some issues online but there was no sign of such a website."
Ironically, the city, which has emerged as a hub of cyber crimes in AP and tops the list in cyber crimes next to Bengaluru in the second straight year among 53 mega cities in the country still lacks an official website for the cyber crimes investigation cell.
Efforts to launch official website of the Vizag city police are on and hopefully it will be unveiled soon, said DCP C.M. Trivikram Varma.
