Telangana: Chief Minister KCR eyes both Cantonments

If defence ministry agrees to his proposal, CM is keen on building the new Secretariat

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has stepped up efforts to shift military installations and units in Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, AOC Centre, Bolarum and other areas to a single location on the city outskirts.

Mr Rao is planning to meet defence minister Manohar Parrikar in New Delhi on May 6 and submit the proposal to this effect. He will cite problems to citizens besides security risks for defence units located in the midst of residential areas to seek the shifting. The TS government wants to utilise the existing cantonment and military lands located in prime areas for government purposes.

If the defence ministry agrees to his proposal, Mr Rao is keen on building the new Secretariat either at Bison Training Grounds or Gymkhana Grounds in Secunderabad, which belong to the defence ministry, instead of at Erragadda.

The idea of shifting military installations and units from the city was first mooted by the Chief Minister in November 2014. Mr Rao had preliminary talks with CMO officials and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi then but the proposals have been pending since then. Mr Rao will formally submit the proposals to the Centre on May 6.
